Petascale AI Lab at UTSA: How the AI Cowboys Are Leading San Antonio's AI Infrastructure
The AI Cowboys have built a petascale AI lab at UT San Antonio delivering 1-1.5 PFLOPS of compute power. Here is what it means for AI research, cybersecurity, and enterprise innovation in San Antonio.

Petascale Computing Comes to San Antonio
Inside UT San Antonio sits an AI lab that represents a significant milestone for the San Antonio technology ecosystem. Designed, engineered, and operated by The AI Cowboys, this facility delivers 1 to 1.5 PFLOPS (petaFLOPS) of computational power — crossing the threshold for petascale computing.
To put that in perspective, this configuration operates at 40-65% of the performance of Astra (Sandia National Laboratories), approximately 2.4% of Trinity, and roughly 0.04% of El Capito — the type of compute that once lived exclusively in national supercomputing facilities, now operating locally, on campus, in San Antonio.
Why This Matters
Based on publicly available data, no other San Antonio facility publicly demonstrates petascale performance or exascale-class architecture. This lab represents a first for the city — and a signal of what is possible when advanced AI infrastructure is deployed outside of traditional national laboratory settings.
The lab is not designed to compete with national supercomputing centers. Its purpose is different: accelerate real-world AI engineering, research collaboration, and enterprise innovation within the region.
Use Cases
The petascale lab supports workloads across multiple domains:
LLM Training
Training and fine-tuning large language models requires sustained GPU compute at scale. The lab provides the throughput necessary to train domain-specific models for defense, healthcare, legal, and cybersecurity applications — without relying on cloud providers.Cybersecurity Analytics
Processing network telemetry, threat intelligence feeds, and behavioral analysis at scale demands compute resources that most organizations cannot access. The petascale lab enables security research and development at a level that matches the threat landscape.Digital Twins
Creating high-fidelity digital representations of physical systems — from urban infrastructure to military installations — requires simulation capabilities that only petascale compute can deliver in real time.Scientific Modeling
Molecular dynamics, climate modeling, materials science, and other computationally intensive research disciplines benefit directly from on-premise petascale resources accessible to university researchers.Enterprise AI Systems
Building, testing, and deploying production AI systems at enterprise scale requires compute infrastructure that mirrors production environments. The lab provides this capability for San Antonio organizations developing AI solutions.San Antonio's AI Infrastructure Advantage
UTSA is already a national leader in cybersecurity, backed by a #1 national ranking from the Ponemon Institute. The addition of petascale AI infrastructure strengthens the university's position — and San Antonio's — as a hub for advanced technology research and development.
The convergence of cybersecurity expertise, military proximity (Joint Base San Antonio, NSA Texas, 16th Air Force), and now petascale computing creates an ecosystem that few cities in the United States can match.
What Comes Next
The AI Cowboys are committed to expanding this infrastructure as compute demands grow. The lab serves as a foundation for research partnerships, enterprise engagements, and government collaborations that require the kind of compute power previously available only to the largest organizations in the world.
As part of the NSCC Mission Partner ecosystem at UTSA, we are building the infrastructure that San Antonio's AI future requires.
